Three things called East India

- Opened on 4 August 1806 for the East India trade. The Port of London Authority decided to close them in August 1967.

- Opened on 28 March 1994 on the Beckton branch of the DLR, after being planned as Brunswick Wharf.

- East India Dock Road, part of the A13, which Transport for London runs as a red route.
Flats on the old dock sites
South of the road, little of the docks is left: by 1994 the Survey of London found only stretches of original walling. The Export Dock became Virginia Quay, a residential scheme with Virginia Quay Park. On its riverside a monument built in 1951 and refurbished in 1999 marks the settlers who sailed from Blackwall in December 1606 to found Jamestown. On the site of Brunswick Wharf power station, which stopped generating in 1984 and came down in 1988-9, stand the three Elektron Towers and a block called Switch House.
In the census area that takes in Virginia Quay and the north end of Blackwall Way (Tower Hamlets 034D), 98.6% of the 1,050 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats in 2021. 60.8% rented privately, 22.3% owned and 13.2% rented from a social landlord. Flats like these often have a built-in single or double oven. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat.
Aberfeldy, across East India Dock Road
The man who dug the Import Dock, the contractor Hugh McIntosh, bought almost 70 acres north of the docks from the East India Dock Company in 1813. For decades it stayed farmland. From 1857 the McIntosh estate let it on building leases, and terraces went up along Brunswick Road and in Aberfeldy, Athol and Culloden Streets and, west of Brunswick Road, in Dewberry, Spey, Teviot and Wyvis Streets. Those houses had no basements, and the ground floor held a relatively good-sized kitchen.
The area later became the Aberfeldy estate, social housing assembled before and after the war. Poplar HARCA took it over from the council in two stages, in 1998 and 2007, and redevelopment as Aberfeldy Village has had planning permission since July 2012. In January 2024 City Hall approved the next phase with EcoWorld London: 1,500 more homes, 39% of them affordable, and the Abbott Road underpass turned over to people on foot and on bikes.

Zones D1 and B3 either side of the A13
The A13 is a red route, so the van uses the side streets. On the council's traffic-order map the streets south of it, round the station, Virginia Quay and Blackwall Way, are in zone D1, while Aberfeldy to the north is in zone B3. Both are controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, so at weekends there are no permit hours, and a weekend visit costs the weekday price. Private land and estate roads set their own rules.
