The Greenwich Prime Meridian crosses the DLR at the eastern end of the East India platforms, and an illuminated blue line under the tracks marks it at street level. The station opened on 28 March 1994 with the Beckton branch, and takes its name from the East India Docks, where ships trading with the Indian subcontinent used to tie up. It stands in Blackwall.
East India is a station, not a neighbourhood
East India is a station name. What people mean by it is the housing within walking distance: Blackwall, the riverside flats at Virginia Quay, and above all Aberfeldy, on the triangular site bounded by the A12, the A13 East India Dock Road and Abbott Road. Small terraced houses went up across that ground between 1864 and 1885, the war flattened a great deal of it, and the Aberfeldy Estate replaced them in phases that began in the 1930s and were not finished until the late 1970s. The streets read as Scottish because the developer David McIntosh named them so, Aberfeldy Street after Aberfeldy in Perthshire.

The 2012 permission set those terms: 297 units demolished, 211 of them social rent, and 1,100 built back, of which 170 social rent, 20 intermediate and close to a thousand market rent. The masterplan that followed runs to 1,565 homes at 38.9% affordable, with Poplar HARCA and EcoWorld London behind it. New flats here take a single integrated oven under the worktop at £77, a flat hob, and an extractor hood at £28 above it. The A12 and the East India Dock Road are through routes, so we come in off the side streets. ULEZ applies and the van is compliant.

Is East India the same as Blackwall or Poplar?
The station is in Blackwall. Aberfeldy sits behind the East India Dock Road on the Poplar side. The price is the same across all of it.
The oven is new and integrated, does that make it harder?
No. Racks, shelves, trays and runners lift out and soak in the heated tank in the van, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products.
Do you charge more for E14?
No. The price is fixed on the phone, there is no premium-area surcharge, and no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
What if the oven has never been cleaned?
The method does not change. A single runs about ninety minutes and a double roughly two hours, and it is heat-tested before we sign off.
