East Ham North was one of Newham's 20 council wards until the elections of May 2022, when the borough was redrawn into 24. Most of its area, from just south of Plashet Grove up towards Romford Road, is now in Plashet ward, and the rest is mainly in Little Ilford and Manor Park.
The poets' avenues north of Plashet Grove
The old ward has a set of avenues named after poets: Byron, Wordsworth, Shelley and Tennyson Avenues, with Milton Avenue just south of Plashet Grove. On Plashet Grove itself stands Plashet School, a girls' school in two buildings, one each side of the road. The south site opened in 1932 as East Ham Grammar School for Girls and the north site followed in the 1950s; the two merged in 1972, and in November 2000 they were joined by the Plashet Unity Bridge, an enclosed footbridge over the road designed by Birds Portchmouth Russum.
The census area that covers Byron, Wordsworth and Tennyson Avenues and the school had about 560 households in 2021. 40.9% lived in a terraced house, 23.0% in a purpose-built block of flats and 10.8% in part of a converted or shared house. By tenure, 39.2% rented privately, 23.4% rented from the council or a housing association, and 36.3% owned, 22.7% of them outright.

In a terraced house the kitchen is often at the back, and the oven may be an eye-level double in a tall unit, a built-under double or a freestanding cooker, depending on when the kitchen was last refitted. A flat made out of a house can have less room and a single oven. The method is the same for all of them. Dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

Permit hours on the avenues
Byron, Shelley, Tennyson and Milton Avenues, Kensington Avenue and Plashet School are all inside Newham's East Ham parking zone. The council's table gives its controlled hours as 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. A Sunday booking is outside those hours and costs the weekday price; on other days we need the street name so the team knows where to park.

Is East Ham North still a ward?
No. It was abolished in 2022. The avenues round Plashet School are now in Plashet ward, but the postcode and the price are unchanged.
Do you cover the town hall end of High Street North?
Yes. That part of East Ham, south towards Barking Road, has its own East Ham page.
I rent a converted flat on one of the avenues. Can the invoice go to my landlord?
Yes. It can be made out to the letting agency, with photos for the checkout file on request, and keys for an empty flat can be collected by arrangement.
