High Street North was once White Post Lane, the line where East Ham parish met Little Ilford in the north. East Ham's town hall, finished in 1903, stands at the junction of Barking Road and High Street South.
The Burges family's terraces
The Burges family, the largest landowners in East Ham, began building on their estate of some 400 acres shortly before 1890; the work ran until the First World War and was finished after it, and the area between High Street North and Burges Road was part of it. The Victoria County History sums up the Burges and Upton Park estates as long terraces of small but well-built houses for clerks and skilled workers. In 1896 the district council bought a house and its grounds to make Central Park.

Private renting (42.9%) and owning (39.9%) were close, with 16.4% renting from the council or a housing association.

Parking in the East Ham, Market Street and Wakefield zones
On Newham's zone map, High Street North and Burges Road are in the East Ham zone. Central Park Road is in the Market Street zone, and Katherine Road in the Wakefield zone. All three are controlled from 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and none has the event-day rules used round Stratford. Sunday is outside the hours of all three. On other days the team needs somewhere to park, so give us the street when you book.
