East Finchley's Tube station is a Grade II listed design of 1939 by Charles Holden and L. H. Bucknell, built as the terminus of the Northern line, and Eric Aumonier's metal archer is still on the south end of its bridge. East End was badly bombed, and the Victoria County History says tightly packed cottages between the Great North Road and the railway, around the George inn, were to be replaced by eleven-storey flats in 1954. Finchley Municipal Borough Council's East Finchley Redevelopment Area went on to include two eleven-storey blocks at Prospect Ring, 88 flats approved in 1958, and one at Norfolk Close with 44 flats in 1962. A council estate of 274 flats followed in 1975 at Vale Farm, near the Great North Road.
It shows in the census. Of the 6,899 households in East Finchley ward in 2021, 22.8% rented from the council or a housing association, 28.1% rented privately and 48.2% owned. Purpose-built flats were 44.6% of homes. On an upper floor the racks, trays and side runners are still lifted out and soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the flat.
