The part of East Dulwich east of Lordship Lane was built in twenty years. Between 1865 and 1885 fields and market gardens became streets of houses, on two estates.
Victorian houses aimed at London clerks
The University of Greenwich's Ideal Homes history of the suburb sets it out. Friern Manor Farm, a dairy farm between Wood Vale, Barry Road and Lordship Lane, was bought by the British Land Company and sold off as 200 building plots. The land to its west, up to East Dulwich Road, was the Bowyer-Smith estate. The houses were aimed at the lower middle classes, typically London clerks, and the first residents were mostly young families. East Dulwich and North Dulwich stations both opened in 1868, and the houses vary in style from simple to the Victorian Gothic of Barry Road.
Many houses here are now divided. In Goose Green ward, which takes in East Dulwich station, Goose Green, Barry Road and Tell Grove, 35.8% of households at the 2021 Census lived in part of a converted or shared house, 29.8% had a terraced house and only 18.6% lived in a purpose-built block of flats. Of the ward's 5,912 households, almost a third (31.9%) rented privately and 47.8% owned their home.
A flat in a split Victorian house often has a narrow kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker. A whole house with the kitchen opened up at the back has room for a double oven or a range. The method is the same for both: dust sheets down, racks, trays and side runners out to be soaked and cleaned separately, then the cavity, fan cover and door glass degreased by hand indoors.

Parking zones in East Dulwich
Southwark's zone list has zone ED for East Dulwich, controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, and zone PW for Peckham West, controlled only from 9am to 11am, both Monday to Friday; outside those times permits are not needed. Which zone a street is in, if any, changes from road to road around Lordship Lane and Goose Green, so check the sign on the bay. The council says that outside a zone there can still be yellow lines and short-stay bays, so always check signs and lines.

My street is in zone PW. Does that matter for the van?
Zone PW is only controlled from 9am to 11am on weekdays, according to the council's list, so it does not apply at weekends, and weekend visits are charged at the weekday price.
Can you do the hob as well as the double oven?
Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic one £23 on top of the oven price; a double, hob and extractor booked together is £143.
