A village that stayed rural into the 1920s
The name East Barnet was in use by 1294, and the village grew up where the road crossed Pymmes Brook. A bridge there, Katebrygge, is recorded in 1406 and probably gave Cat Hill its name. Barnet Council's local history says the village stayed very rural up to the 1920s: even after Barnet station opened in 1850 nobody rushed to build. Jackson Road and Capel Road were laid out in the 1880s, Jackson Road by William Jackson, who also held the licence of the Prince of Wales pub. The Clockhouse, the big house in the middle of the village, came down in 1925, and Clockhouse Parade, which reuses its clock turret, took its place. In 1932 Littlegrove House was demolished and much of its estate built over with suburban houses.
