East Acton's biggest house, later called Manor House, had 20 hearths in 1664, more than any other in Acton parish; it was pulled down in 1911 and its site was used for playing fields.
The Goldsmiths' Company streets round East Acton
Much of the land round the old village belonged to the Goldsmiths' Company, and the Victoria County History follows what it did with it. In 1920 the company let a site in Bromyard Avenue for a huge Ministry of Pensions office, and built Perryn House, 36 flats, to the north; the office building, Bromyard House, is flats today. After 1928 it built Bowes Road, Gibbon Road and a third street between Western Avenue and the village. In 1935 it bought the White House on the green, and by 1937 a block of flats called East Acton Court stood in its place. Three more of the old houses had made way for semi-detached houses by 1938, and flats round a garden went up on the Manor Farm site in 1956. By 1932 everything south of Western Avenue was built up, apart from the sports grounds; a David Lloyd club and Acton Cricket Club are still on East Acton Lane.
The census small area that takes in Beechwood Grove, Bowes Road, Glendun Road and part of East Acton Lane (Ealing 024B) shows that mix. Of its 658 households in 2021, 39.7% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 34.8% in a semi.
An interwar semi often has a small back kitchen, and the cooker can be anything from a freestanding 60cm model to a built-in double. In a 1930s block the kitchen is often narrow, with a single under the worktop. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand indoors.
Letting in the old East Acton ward
In that same small area, 38.2% of households rented privately in 2021 and 20.0% rented from the council or a housing association. These streets were in East Acton ward before the 2022 boundary changes, and that old ward has been under Ealing's selective licensing scheme since 1 April 2022, for five years, so a landlord letting a home here to a single household needs a selective licence.

Is East Acton in Ealing or Hammersmith and Fulham?
Both. East Acton Lane, Bromyard Avenue and the streets west of Old Oak Common Lane are Ealing. The station and the Old Oak and Wormholt cottage estates to the east are Hammersmith and Fulham, and those estates are on our Wormwood Scrubs page.
Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes. We work seven days, and weekends cost the same as weekdays. Zone T on Bromyard Avenue is controlled on Sundays too, so the house number matters there.
Our cooker is a freestanding one in a small kitchen. Is there room?
Usually. Indoors the work is the oven itself, on dust sheets, and you see it lit before we leave.
