Bell House, built in 1767, and Nos. 103 and 105 Dulwich Village survive from the years when the village first drew affluent visitors and residents. Before that it had been a small place on the estate Edward Alleyn bought from the Crown in 1605, and whose College of God's Gift he founded in 1619; the burial ground at the Calton Avenue corner was consecrated in 1616.
Georgian houses and cottages on the village street
Southwark's appraisal of the conservation area says most of the buildings on the street between the burial ground and the Old College are listed. No. 57 is a detached house of 1797; Nos. 70 to 82 are a terrace of 18th and early 19th century cottages and shops; and Nos. 94 to 98 were rebuilt in 1936, No. 94 as a copy of the early 18th century butcher's shop that stood there. In a house this old the kitchen has often been moved or extended, and a range cooker or a double oven in a tall housing may well sit in a rear extension.
Pickwick, Aysgarth and Boxall Roads
The Greyhound Inn, whose regulars the appraisal says included Dickens and Ruskin, stood where Pickwick and Aysgarth Roads are now. It was pulled down in 1898 and the roads were built soon after, in a tighter grain than the village street: Boxall Road has the humblest houses and the smallest gardens, then Aysgarth, Pickwick and the roomier Edwardian and Arts and Crafts houses of Burbage Road. Older still are the cottages the Dulwich Cottages Company had Charles Barry the younger design in the late 1870s, which survive on Turney Road, Boxall Road and at the south end of Calton Avenue.
Whatever the house, dust sheets go down first. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Half the homes have four bedrooms or more
The census area the House of Commons Library calls Herne Hill and Dulwich Park, which takes in the village, had 3,150 households in 2021. Half of them, 49.9%, lived in a home with four or more bedrooms, against 11.8% across Southwark. Zone DV and the Calton Avenue filter
The Dulwich Village zone, DV, is new: Southwark's parking map dates it to 2025 and puts Calton Avenue and Gilkes Crescent inside it. It is controlled only from 8am to 9.30am and from 3pm to 5pm, Monday to Friday, according to the council's zone list. On the same map Pickwick, Aysgarth and Boxall Roads show no zone, and part of Burbage Road is in Herne Hill's zone HH, controlled from noon to 2pm on weekdays. The council has also made the traffic filter permanent where Calton Avenue, Court Lane and Dulwich Village meet, and the Streets for People works there, including the new public square, were completed in February 2025. Yes. A 90cm range is £143 and a 100cm range is £167; a 90cm range takes 2 to 3 hours on site.
Do you clean two-oven AGAs?
Yes, for £143. It takes about half a day, and the AGA has to be switched off the night before so it is cool when we arrive.
Can the hob or hood of a range be cleaned too?
Yes, for £48 on top of the oven price.
