One street, two councils
Drury Lane runs from High Holborn down to Aldwych, and the borough boundary runs with it: the northern half is Camden, the southern half is the City of Westminster. That decides which parking rules apply on the day. The Camden end sits in the CA-C controlled parking zone, the Holborn and Covent Garden one. Cross to the Westminster side and the permit scheme, the hours and the bay markings all change.
Peabody blocks and old warehouses
The Wild Street estate opened in 1881, when Peabody put up thirteen six-storey blocks to rehouse people cleared out of the slums, lost two of them to bombing in the 1940s, and modernised what was left in the 1960s so the flats became self-contained. Those kitchens are compact and the oven is usually a plain built-under single, so a single oven clean on Wild Street is the booking we take most. Then there is the other half of the street. 145 Drury Lane was a tobacco warehouse built in 1916 and turned into 51 flats in 2000, five of them penthouses, and the fittings up there are a different world from the Peabody landings.

Why the tank stays outside the flat
Racks, shelves and side runners lift out and go into a heated tank bolted in the van. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass get degreased by hand indoors, with non-caustic products, which is what keeps the smell out of a sixth-floor flat on a stairwell with no lift worth the name. The oven is heat-tested before we sign it off.
Checkouts run the diary
Covent Garden lets turn over fast and the oven is the line on the inventory that gets argued about. A single takes about ninety minutes, a double nearer two hours, so a checkout clean fits inside a morning if the agent gives us the keys early. Kemble Street is the usual approach.
