The green that gave Drayton Green station its name was fenced and improved as an open space in 1908; by then its last four acres were all that was left, and semi-detached houses had already taken the north-east corner.
Drayton Green, a hamlet until the late 19th century
The Victoria County History traces the place back to 1387, when it was simply Drayton, later Drayton in Ealing to keep it apart from West Drayton. In 1636 about a dozen buildings stood on three sides of the green, and in 1766 only eight householders paid church rates. The Great Western main line ran past the south end from 1838, and the history says it perhaps helped keep the hamlet apart from Ealing Dean.
Building arrived from the east. Argyle Road and Sutherland Road were laid out in 1870, as the railway prepared to open Castle Hill station (now West Ealing), and houses were coming up them by 1886. Around 1901 the east side of the green was built up, and Drayton House, the big house on that side, gave way to a school that opened in 1908. The branch line through Drayton Green station opened in 1905 and hemmed the old hamlet in from the west. By 1920 there were houses over all of Drayton House's grounds, along Drayton Avenue.
The Census shows how that building is used now. In the small area around the green and east of it (ONS area Ealing 018D, which takes in Sutherland Road and Drayton Gardens), 26.5% of the 758 households lived in part of a converted or shared house in 2021, 28.4% in a purpose-built flat and 31.9% in a terraced house. A flat carved out of an Edwardian house tends to have a narrow kitchen at the back, with a built-in single under the worktop or a slim freestanding cooker.
Renting by the green and the station
In the same small area, 44.5% of households rented privately in 2021 and 47.8% owned their home. Nearer the station, the area that includes Coleridge Square and Yeames Close (Ealing 018B) is mostly purpose-built flats, 54.7% of households, and 27.5% rented from a housing association or similar social landlord.

Parking in zone NN, Drayton Green
Most streets round the green are in Ealing's controlled parking zone NN, which runs Monday to Saturday from 10am to 11am and 2pm to 3pm. The council's list includes Drayton Avenue, Drayton Gardens, Drayton Grove, Drayton Road, Courtfield Gardens, Lynton Avenue, Sutherland Road, Manor Road and part of Argyle Road. Part of Drayton Green Road (numbers 2 to 36 and odd 53 to 57) is in zone H instead, which runs Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5.30pm. Yes, seven days a week, and weekends cost the same as weekdays. Zone NN's two one-hour windows apply on Saturdays as well, so the street name still helps.
What happens in a small kitchen on the day?
Dust sheets go down first. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand indoors. The oven is then put back together, heated and checked with you before the team leaves.
