The first families moved into the Downham cottage estate in February 1925. Lewisham Council marked the centenary in 2025 with grants for local events and with Luke Jerram's seven-metre sun sculpture, Helios, on Durham Hill.
The first Downham kitchens
The contractor, Holland, Hannen and Cubitts, brought its materials in on a narrow-gauge railway from Grove Park. Inside, each kitchen had a larder, a coal-fired copper for the washing, a large white earthenware sink with a cold tap, and a black cast-iron gas stove with brass taps. A refitted kitchen in one of these houses often holds a 60cm built-in single or a freestanding cooker, and a family that has extended the back may have room for a double.
Around Downham Way and Oakridge Lane (census area Lewisham 038D), 588 households were counted in 2021. Of those, 41.8% owned their home, 34.9% rented from the council or a housing association and 22.1% rented privately. Terraced houses (37.3%) and flats (37.2%) were almost level, and 5.7% lived in a commercial building, such as a flat over a shop.
The Bromley end of the estate
In 1926 the residents of Alexandra Crescent, then a private road in Bromley, had a seven-foot wall topped with broken glass built across Valeswood Road where it met their crescent, to stop people from the estate walking through to Bromley. It stood until 1950. The boundary is still there on the map: the southern ends of Valeswood and Rangefield Roads, and Bonville Road, are in the London Borough of Bromley, while the rest of the estate, BR1 postcodes included, is Lewisham. On the Bromley side (census area Bromley 040D), 58.5% of households lived in a terraced house in 2021.
The postcode does not change the job. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows.
Parking on Downham Way and the estate roads
Lewisham's controlled parking zone map shows no zone around Downham Way, Oakridge Lane or Durham Hill. Zone D, which the council's table calls Grove Park and runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm, covers streets further east round Grove Park station, among them Bedivere, Galahad and Launcelot Roads. Downham ward was in the council's 2025 Sustainable Streets consultation on parking, with the results still being analysed, and the Bromley streets follow Bromley's rules, so check the signs on your road. The team needs somewhere to park.
