Dormers Wells is a grid of semi-detached and terraced houses with gardens, put up mostly between the 1930s and the 1970s on what had been farmland. That build period decides the oven. The semis around Dormers Wells Lane and Allenby Road usually have a freestanding cooker in a back kitchen, often a 90cm range in the houses where two or three generations cook, and the grease sits on the roof of the cavity where nobody looks. Then there is the Golf Links Estate, whose three towers are named after golf courses: St Andrews, Gleneagles and Sheringham.

Parking is easier here than it is nearer the Broadway
Most of these streets were laid out with front gardens deep enough for a car, which is why a lot of Dormers Wells addresses have a driveway and no permit worry at all. The towers are the awkward ones. Lifts, keys, long walks back to the van.

Do you clean 90cm range cookers?
Yes, £114. They are common in the bigger UB1 family houses and the burners and pan supports go in the tank with everything else.
Is the oven usable straight away?
Yes. There is no curing time and no chemical smell to air out, because the caustic side of the work stays in the van.
Can you get to a flat in one of the towers?
We do. St Andrews, Gleneagles and Sheringham all have lift access, and we just need somewhere legal to leave the van for the ninety minutes.
What about the extractor hood?
£28, filters included. In a small estate kitchen the hood is usually worse than the oven, because the filter has never been touched.
