At their height the Surrey Commercial Docks covered about 85% of the Rotherhithe peninsula, some 460 acres of docks, timber ponds and canal. They worked in one form or another from 1696, when Greenland Dock began as the Howland Great Wet Dock, until 1969. Greenland Dock, South Dock, Canada Water and Surrey Water are the water that was kept; Russia Dock was filled in and planted as a woodland.
Houses as well as flats on the old Surrey Docks
Over 5,500 new homes were built on the old docks in the late 1980s and early 1990s, from detached houses to large blocks of flats. That mix still shows in the 2021 Census for Surrey Docks ward, which takes in Greenland Dock and South Dock: 67.6% of its 5,893 households were in a purpose-built block of flats, but 26.8% had a whole house (18.5% terraced, 7.0% semi-detached and 1.3% detached). Only 4.5% rented from the council. 41.2% rented privately and 35.3% owned outright or with a mortgage.

Greenland Passage, the Danish-built corner of Greenland Dock
Greenland Passage, at the river entrance to Greenland Dock, was built in 1988 by Islef UK to designs by the Danish firm Kjaer & Richter. Its 152 homes are in two perimeter blocks, Princes Court and Queen of Denmark Court, a terrace of three-storey townhouses with integral garages on Royal Court, and the nine-storey King Frederik IX Tower. Residents park in three underground car parks or in the garages along Finland Street and South Sea Street.
In a three-storey townhouse the kitchen is not always on the ground floor. The racks, trays and side runners still come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets. Where residents' parking is underground, the team needs somewhere to park on the street, so mention what is near your door.

Parking on the peninsula: weekday zones
The council's CPZ list has three zones named for Rotherhithe and the Surrey Docks, and none of them runs at weekends: S (Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks) is Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6.30pm, while N (South Rotherhithe) and H (Rotherhithe) are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6.30pm. Outside those hours permits are not needed, so a Saturday or Sunday visit, at the weekday price, is the easy option. During the week check the sign on your street.
