Devons Road station opened on 31 August 1987, one of the DLR's original stations, on the route of the North London Railway's Bow to Poplar branch, which opened on 1 January 1852.
Engine sheds, Stroudley Walk and the Widow's Son
Devons Road is a road in Bromley-by-Bow, about 1.1 km long, and its history is railway history. The North London Railway had a locomotive depot here from about 1850. After Devons Road No. 1 shed closed in 1964, the north end of the road was closed to traffic and renamed Stroudley Walk after the locomotive engineer William Stroudley. Poplar HARCA has owned the housing, shops and pedestrian area since 2006.
Warren House and 30-49 Stroudley Walk were pulled down in 2022. Their replacement, built with Muse, has 115 homes for affordable rent (82) and shared ownership (33), from studios to four-bedroom flats, and HARCA says it was completed in summer 2026. Near the station, the Widow's Son at No. 75 has been listed at Grade II* since 1974 and is known for its Good Friday hot cross bun custom.
New flats like these often have a built-in oven under the worktop. Its racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Houses as well as flats near the station
Bromley South ward, which takes in the station, is mostly flats: 92.3% of its households lived in a purpose-built block in 2021 and only 4.1% in a terraced house. The small census area round the station and the Widow's Son (Tower Hamlets 008E) is different. Of its 539 households, 23.2% lived in a terraced house and 65.7% in flats, and 54.4% rented from a social landlord (36.5% a housing association, 17.8% the council), against 23.0% renting privately and 19.9% owning.
A terraced house kitchen usually has more room than a flat's, which leaves space for a freestanding cooker or a range.

Zones B2 and B3 around Devons Road
The council's traffic-order map splits the streets here between two sub-zones of zone B. The Widow's Son, Stroudley Walk and Bow Common Lane are in B2; the station, Barry Blandford Way and Twelvetrees Crescent are in B3. Both are controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, so a Saturday or Sunday visit, at the weekday price, avoids permit hours. Stroudley Walk is a pedestrian area, so for a flat on it the van parks on the nearest open street.
