Deptford St Paul is the parish carved out of Deptford St Nicholas in 1730, named after Thomas Archer's church on the High Street, built between 1712 and 1730 and listed at Grade I. When the Metropolitan Borough of Deptford was formed in 1900 it took the same ground as St Paul's parish, while St Nicholas, the riverside parish to the north, was joined to Greenwich. Since boundary changes in 1994 the old St Nicholas parish has itself been divided between the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Lewisham.
Early 18th-century houses near the church
Lewisham designated the St Paul's Church conservation area in 1975 and the Deptford High Street one beside it in 1976. The council's description singles out the Grade II* listed houses on Albury Street, just north of the church: early 18th-century houses, most of the odd numbers from 13 to 43, and 34 to 40 opposite. It also names small vernacular buildings along the High Street and on Tanners Hill, the latter listed at Grade II.
Houses of that age were built long before fitted kitchens, so the cooker sits wherever a later owner put it, which could be a freestanding model or a range. None of that changes the job. Market days and parking near the High Street
Deptford market runs on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 9am to 5.30pm, and the council closes the High Street to traffic from 6am to 7pm on those days. Two of Lewisham's permit zones carry Deptford names: Deptford Central (S) is controlled 9am to 6pm on weekdays and 9am to 1.30pm on Saturdays, and the newer Deptford zone (DP), enforced since 13 May 2024, 9am to 5pm on weekdays.
