Deptford is split between two councils. St Nicholas church on Deptford Green, and Benbow Street and McMillan Street beside it, have SE8 postcodes but are in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Lewisham has the High Street, Albury Street and Evelyn Street, and Watergate Street, a short walk west of the church.
Flats from the Crossfield to Plough Way
Poor housing made Deptford an early focus of the London County Council's programme to improve living conditions. The Crossfield Estate, built in the 1930s, is nine blocks of flats cut into three groups by Deptford Church Street and the railway viaduct, and since May 2012 it has been part of the Deptford Creekside conservation area. Lewisham's own account says that when the council changed its housing policy for the estate in the late 1970s, giving priority to young single professionals, it gave the impetus to the arts and music scene Deptford was known for in the 1970s and 80s.
North Deptford is newer. On Plough Way, also called Surrey Wharves, Marine Wharf West includes 532 homes and Cannon Wharf, marketed as Greenland Place, 679, with two tall buildings of 20 and 23 storeys. Beside the river, Convoys Wharf is 40 acres, the largest development site in the borough; in March 2014 the Mayor of London resolved to grant outline approval for up to about 3,500 homes there.
A new-build flat usually has one built-in single oven under the worktop. A 1930s council flat is more likely to have a freestanding cooker. The job is the same in both: dust sheets go down, racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in your kitchen.
Renting in north Deptford
Evelyn ward, which takes in the streets around Deptford Park and Evelyn Street, had 6,131 households at the 2021 Census. Of those, 41.3% rented from the council or a housing association, 31.7% rented privately and 23.2% owned their home. That is nearly 2,000 privately rented homes in one ward, and a checkout inventory normally includes the oven.

Parking for the van in Deptford's zones
Lewisham brought in two new zones here. Enforcement in the Deptford zone (DP) started on 13 May 2024, and the Evelyn zone (EN) followed in early 2025; the council's zone table gives both as 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. The Deptford Central zone (S) runs 9am to 6pm on weekdays and until 1.30pm on Saturday.
Not every road is in a zone. In its November 2023 recommendations for Evelyn, the council proposed leaving out the roads north of Deptford Park, where a much higher share of replies said the measures would not help their street; those roads were to keep unrestricted parking, with double yellow lines at junctions. Signs at the entry to each zone are the final word, so tell us the street when you book; the team needs somewhere to park.

Yes. The method is the same on both sides of the borough line. The Lewisham zones above do not cover Greenwich streets, so mention the street when you call.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, at the weekday price. The DP and EN zones run Monday to Friday on the council's table, so their weekday hours do not apply at a weekend; the signs on the street are still the final word.
I'm on a high floor at Cannon Wharf. Does that change anything?
