Deptford is named after the deep ford where Watling Street, now the A2, crossed the Ravensbourne, and Deptford Bridge carries the road over the same spot. On 17 June 1497 it gave its name to a battle, when Henry VII's army beat Cornish rebels who had marched on London over war taxes.
Two boroughs at one bridge
The river still divides two councils. The DLR station, opened in 1999 on the line to Lewisham, one stop before Elverson Road, stands in the Royal Borough of Greenwich close to the boundary, with its platforms raised above the A2 beside the creek. The postcode on the bridge road itself is Greenwich too. A short way west, Seager Place, Mill Lane and Brookmill Road are in Lewisham.
A gin distillery and the Seager Place flats
At 14 and 16 Deptford Bridge, on the Lewisham side, an early 18th-century brown-brick building of three storeys over a basement still carries the words "Established 1779. Holland and Co's Distillery and Bonded Store" above its carriage entrance. It has been listed at Grade II since March 1973. Holland and Co became a subsidiary of Seager Evans, the gin makers founded in 1805, who had distilleries at Millbank and in Deptford. Newer flats stand nearby on Seager Place, where two of the blocks are named Distillery Tower and The Crescent.
