Henry de Capella was granted a market and an annual fair at Denham in 1227, but by the 15th century the attempt to become a town appears to have failed, mainly because of the established market town of Uxbridge, only three miles east.
Old houses on Village Road
So the old village stayed small. Denham has 46 listed buildings, and apart from the estates of Denham Place and Denham Court most of them are along Village Road, which curves north of the River Misbourne, according to Buckinghamshire's historic town assessment. They are a mix of brick and timber-framed buildings, and many of the timber-framed ones were refronted in the 18th century. The Old Bakery hides a 14th-century cruck-built hall behind work of the 18th century and the 1950s, and the timber-framed Old Cottage is recorded as 16th century. The village has been a conservation area since 1971, revised in March 2006.
A kitchen fitted into a building that old is often narrow, with the cooker wherever a later owner could place it. Dust sheets protect the floor, the racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Twentieth-century Denham, over the river
Most of the twentieth-century building went up south of the river and its meadows. Large Edwardian villas went up along Denham Avenue and Cheapside Lane, then Ashmead Lane; Denham Close followed in a municipal style, and after 1945 the council built Courtfield Gardens and Priory Close near the Oxford Road, with shops at Oxford Gardens. The assessment describes the modern housing as mainly two-storey, detached and brick.
A kilometre north of the village, in Denham Green, Alexander Korda set up Denham Film Studios in 1935 and 1936; the Historic England list entry credits the design to Walter Gropius and Maxwell Fry. Wings of the Morning, the first British Technicolor film, was made there in 1936 and Brief Encounter in 1945. The county's heritage record gives Disney's Robin Hood (1952) as the last film made there; the studio was sold for warehousing in 1953, was partly demolished in 1981 and what survives was listed Grade II in 1985. Modernism in Metroland says the Gropius and Fry laboratory buildings survive, converted to apartments.

The Denham ward of the 2021 Census takes in the village, Denham Green, Higher Denham, New Denham and also Fulmer. It had 4,168 households: a quarter of them (25.6%) lived in a purpose-built flat and 35.6% in a detached house. Renting was split almost evenly, 15.2% privately and 15.4% from a social landlord.

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
