Debden takes its name from an old manor at the estate's northern end, around Debden Hall and Debden Green. When the county history volume for the area came out in 1956, the green was a hamlet of about eight houses and had been left outside the estate.

The Victoria County History of 1956 says the estate was "built since 1945 by the London County Council", and an aerial photograph taken on 4 August 1950 is catalogued as the Debden estate under construction. The Bank of England began building its banknote works beside the Central line here in 1954, and its museum notes that the houses behind the site were built for people whose homes in east London had been destroyed in the Second World War.
