The market is the fixed point everything else moves around
Ridley Road Market sits opposite the station and has been trading since the 1880s, on land once owned by Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London. It started as about 20 stalls on Kingsland High Street itself and only moved round the corner when trams and motor traffic made the High Street unworkable. It runs to 150 stalls now. Dalston Kingsland is newer than it looks
The Mildmay line platforms straddle the Hackney and Islington boundary, and although a Kingsland station stood on this site from 1850, it shut in 1865 and the station you use now was only opened by British Rail in 1983. Two kitchen types, a few streets apart
- Dalston Square: 244 flats built by Barratt on land from Hackney Council and Transport for London, a £160m scheme with a concierge. Integrated single ovens.
- Holly Street: the tall council blocks were thinned out and rebuilt low-rise, so the cookers there are a mix of ages.
- The Victorian terraces off Dalston Lane, where a 90cm range turns up in a knocked-through back kitchen.

Yes. E8 turns over fast. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
What happens to the racks and trays?
They come out to the heated tank in the van, with the shelves and side runners. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, so nothing caustic comes into the kitchen.
Can you reach a flat above a shop on Kingsland High Street?
Yes. The stair is usually narrow and the parts go down it in trays rather than loose.
Will my oven work straight after?
