In 1294 the name was written Derleston, and as late as the mid 18th century Dalston was a small hamlet half way along Dalston Lane, the only road from Kingsland to Hackney village.
Dalston Lane, the old village street
Large-scale building began at the west end of the lane after 1800. Robert Sheldrick was building on the south side in 1807, and Dalston Terrace had new houses by him in 1813 and 1816; in 1821 it housed mainly merchants and professional people, while the poor lived in the side streets to the north, one of them Hartwell Street, named after a cow-keeper who lived there. That year Dalston, counting the lane and its offshoots, had 1,366 people. After Dalston Junction station opened in 1865 the western end of the lane turned largely industrial.
Hackney protects what is left as the Dalston Lane (West) conservation area. It was designated in 2005 and extended west on 23 January 2017, and it now covers the old village core of Georgian and Victorian houses along the lane and the buildings in and around Ashwin Street that show the area's industrial past.

Dalston ward had 3,998 households at the 2021 Census, and 43.0% of them rented privately, the highest share of any ward in Hackney. Another figure stands out: 7.2% lived in part of a converted building other than a house, such as a former warehouse, school or church, again the highest share in the borough. Only 11.6% lived in a terraced house.
A flat in a converted industrial building usually has an open-plan kitchen, with the oven built into a run of units in the living space. With no kitchen door to close, the method matters. Racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Dust sheets go down before anything is taken apart.
With so many lets, the oven is usually part of the move-out checkout. The invoice can go to the letting agency, photos are available for the checkout file, and keys for an empty flat can be collected by arrangement.

The price follows the appliance (single, double, 90cm range or AGA) and is agreed on the phone before the visit. A double oven takes about two hours on site, a single about 90 minutes.
Parking near the Dalston junction
Dalston Lane, Ashwin Street and Hartwell Street are all in zone C, which Hackney lists as controlled Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 6.30pm. Outside those hours no permit or voucher is needed, though yellow lines still apply. Tell us the street when you book; the team needs somewhere to park. The method is the same; only the layout changes. In an open-plan room the dust sheets cover more floor.
I share a house with three others. Is each oven priced separately?
Each appliance has its own price. A shared kitchen with one double oven is one double, agreed on the phone.
Can you do it while I am at work?
For an empty flat between tenancies, keys can be collected by arrangement. If you live there, the sign-off is you looking at the lit oven before we pack up, so plan to be home for the end of the visit.
Is Sunday possible?
Yes, we work seven days, and a Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday. Zone C is not controlled on a Sunday.
