How Dagenham grew between the wars
Most of that growth was one estate. The Victoria County History calls Becontree by far the largest of the London County Council's estates, almost three times the size of St Helier in Surrey, and notes that in 1939 it was described as the largest municipal housing estate in the world. The Dagenham post town also reaches past the old parish: it takes in the whole Becontree estate, including the parts that were in Barking and Ilford before 1965, so a Dagenham address can stand on land that was Barking or Ilford until then.

The interwar cottage houses were built with small kitchens, which usually suit a 60cm freestanding cooker. Visitor permits in Dagenham's parking zones
Barking and Dagenham has been adding controlled parking zones across the Becontree streets, and the zones added in 2025 are all controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm. In a zone the van needs one of your visitor permits during those hours. The council sells them online and they work as soon as they are paid for; its published prices are £1.40 for 4 hours and £3.70 for a day. In those zones no permit is needed outside zone hours or at weekends, and a weekend visit costs the same as a weekday.
