The Becontree estate was built without a high street, and in 1934 Dagenham Urban District Council set out to fill the gap with a shopping centre along the Heathway, the new road laid out from Becontree Heath south to the Tilbury road.
Heathway station, which the council wanted to call Dagenham Central
The station came two years before the shops. It opened as plain Heathway on 12 September 1932, when the District line was extended to Upminster on new electric tracks, and Dagenham Council later pressed for the name Dagenham Central; on 1 May 1949 it became Dagenham Heathway instead. It is still the busiest stop between Barking and Upminster, with 4.74 million entries and exits in 2025.
The Heathway road itself starts up at Becontree Heath, which has its own page. This one covers the shops, the station and the streets either side of them, in the Parsloes, Goresbrook, Alibon and Village wards.
Becontree terraces either side of the Heathway
Around the station the estate is still terrace country. The House of Commons Library calls the census area that takes in most of the streets around the station Dagenham Central, and in 2021 62.8% of its 3,388 households lived in a terraced house and only 7.0% in a purpose-built flat. 35.6% rented from a social landlord (29.9% from the council), 41.5% owned and 22.2% rented privately.
The first Becontree kitchens had a copper boiler for the washing and the bath water, filled from a tank in the attic. A kitchen on the estate today may have a freestanding cooker or a built-in single under a fitted worktop. Whichever it is, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

The price depends on the appliance and is fixed on the phone before anyone comes out. A Becontree cooker can look like a single and price as a double, so here is the test.

The Heathway School Zone and the multi-storey
The plots on the estate were too small for garages, so cars live on the street. On 4 August 2025 the council's Heathway School Zone, permit code HWS, was extended to Boxoll Road (where the Royal Mail sorting office is), Weston Road and Weston Green, north-west of the station towards Becontree Heath. Its resident bays are controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, and its pay-by-phone bays have a 4-hour maximum stay. Nearer the station, read the signs on your own road.
The council also runs the Heathway multi-storey car park, paid by phone. A bay on your own road is better if there is one; give us the street name when you call.

I live on Weston Road. Is a Saturday easier?
For parking, yes, as zone HWS is only controlled on weekdays. A weekend visit costs the same as a weekday one.
Our flat is above a shop on the Heathway. Is that a problem?
No. Stairs add a little time; tell us the floor when you book.
Can you clean the oven before our tenancy ends?
