The Heathway is the spine of this patch, the District line high street where the Heathway Shopping Centre acts as the borough's second town centre, Iceland and Boots and JD next to the station. Step off it either way and you are on the Becontree Estate, London County Council's interwar cottages built between 1921 and 1935. Those houses have a freestanding single cooker by the back door and, crucially for us, no driveways, so everything parks on the street. Bennetts Castle Lane, the long road running down through Parsloes, is the sort of address we cover most.
The cottage cooker
A freestanding single is the standard job, and it takes about ninety minutes. The racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in the heated tank down in the van, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so there is no chemical smell left when we go. We heat-test the oven and sign it off first. If you have a double built into a fitted kitchen, that is a double oven clean at £110.
No driveways on the estate means everything parks on the street, so we drop the tank near your door first.

Parking the permit roads
Because none of the original estate houses has off-street parking, and because Barking and Dagenham has put controlled parking zones across many of the roads either side of the Heathway with permit bays running Monday to Saturday, we work out the drop before the technician arrives. Give us the road and we will sort it. The old Merry Fiddlers corner, a pub since the 1920s until a petrol station replaced it in 1992, is a landmark people still use for directions. Dagenham Heathway station sits between Becontree and Dagenham East on the District line, and all of this is inside the London-wide ULEZ.
