Dagenham East station opened on 1 May 1885 simply as Dagenham, on the new direct line from London to Southend, and took its present name in 1949. Its ticket office, from the 1932 rebuilding, sits above the tracks on Rainham Road South.
Dagenham Village, south of the station
A short walk south is the village the station was named after. Barking and Dagenham made it a conservation area on 31 January 1995, centred on the church of St Peter and St Paul, first mentioned in 1205. Its tower collapsed in 1800, the rebuilding was finished by 1805, and the spire added then was taken down for safety in 1921. Opposite stands the Cross Keys, a 15th-century timber-framed hall house that, according to the council's appraisal, was once a tannery.
Most of the rest went. Crown Street, the old main street, was largely cleared in the 1960s and 1970s, and the council's phased plan of 1972 for the Ibscott Close estate included two new shopping parades, three car parks and new housing. Nearby, St Giles Close and St Giles Avenue are terraces of the 1930s, and prefabricated homes went up on the Rookery Crescent estate off Siviter Way in the 1960s.

The House of Commons Library names the census area here Old Dagenham Park and Village. In 2021 it had 3,033 households, and 49.8% of them lived in a purpose-built block of flats; 47.2% rented from the council or a housing association, 30.9% owned and 19.6% rented privately.
