Dagenham Dock station opened in 1908, built jointly by the railway company and the firm Samuel Williams and Sons, whose founder, a Lambeth lighterman, had bought the marsh here in 1887.
Dagenham Dock is industrial land
The firm filled in the foreshore and built jetties. In 1903 the firm finished a deep-water jetty, the first concrete structure of its kind on the Thames, and in 1911 it built another so that HMS Thunderer, the last warship launched on the Thames, could be fitted out at Dagenham. Between 1909 and 1914 it put up four factories to let, and the marsh south of the railway became an area of heavy industry.

Dagenham Green, north of the station
Dagenham Green is being built on the 45-acre site of Ford's former stamping plant, between New Road, Kent Avenue, Chequers Lane and the railway. Peabody won outline consent for 3,500 homes in March 2022. The first phase is 935 homes, built in partnership with the builder Hill, 35% of them affordable. The first 68 affordable rent homes were finished in February 2026, and in May 2026 the tallest of three rental towers, at 18 storeys, was topped out.
A new flat like these usually has a built-in single under the hob. In a tower block, the floor, whether there is a lift and the way in for a van are what to tell us when you call.

The census came too early for Dagenham Green. In 2021 the area the House of Commons Library names Rylands Estate and Dagenham Dock had about 2,930 households: 48.0% in terraced houses, 25.1% in semis and 15.0% in flats. Of those households, 47.3% owned their home and 30.6% rented privately.
