New Beckton, the housing estate between Beckton and North Woolwich, was first built in 1881, and its street names recalled people and places then in the news, among them Plevna Street and Cyprus Place. The name Cyprus stuck to the whole estate, which the local board complained about for years because it had no main drainage. Cyprus Place is still there, beside the DLR station, which opened in 1994.
Council cottages before 1914, short closes now
Before 1914 East Ham's council housing amounted to some 200 dwellings in cottage terraces, at Savage Gardens, New Beckton and Brooks Avenue, off High Street South. The south of the borough was bombed heavily in the Second World War. Today the streets around Ferndale Street, Cyprus Place and Savage Gardens include many short closes, such as Vulcan Close, Artisan Close, Tansy Close and Pearl Close.

Short bays on Cyprus Place and Ferndale Street
Cyprus is in the older Beckton parking zone, controlled 9am to 6.30pm on weekdays according to Newham's zone table. For Saturdays the table and the council's pay-by-phone list give different hours, so go by the sign on the bay. The bays on that list are short: Cyprus Place has a two-hour bay opposite Baseking Close and 30-minute bays opposite Nos 33/35 to 49/51, Ferndale Street's allow 30 minutes, and Savage Gardens has two-hour bays outside Sapphire Close. A two-hour bay is only just enough for a double (about 2 hours) and short for a range (2 to 3 hours), so mention where the van can stop when you book.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
