Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich is a DLR station, opened in 1999 when the line was extended to Lewisham, and it stands in the historic town centre around the ship, which Royal Greenwich says is part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.
Greenwich town centre's 1830s streets
The streets on the east side of Greenwich Church Street were redrawn around 1830. Greenwich Hospital had its architect, Joseph Kay, replace many of the smaller streets between Church Street and the Hospital with a formal plan that included Nelson Road, College Approach and the market, with Kay's buildings faced in the then fashionable stucco. On the market side of Church Street his shops are regular in width and shallow, backing onto the market's service yards.
Greenwich Church Street itself kept its older line. The council's appraisal of the West Greenwich conservation area (one of the first in the country, designated in March 1968, appraisal updated 2013) calls it the town's oldest thoroughfare; the plots on its west side are narrow and tapering, reflecting medieval origins, and No 45, with the remnants of a timber frame, is one of the earliest survivors. West of Cutty Sark Gardens the scale jumps to post-war council blocks in a plain classical style, spaced out for river views.

The 2021 Census shows how mixed the centre is. In the small census area that takes in the market, Nelson Road, King William Walk and Royal Hill (Greenwich 038B), 61 of the 816 households lived in a commercial building, the census category that covers a flat over a shop: 7.5%. A third (32.4%) had a terraced house, and 40.6% lived in a purpose-built block. Private renters were 27.2% of households and social renters 32.5%.
