Gloucester Circus was meant to be two crescents facing each other across a garden. Michael Searles drew it in 1790 as a speculation aimed at middle-class professionals, the southern crescent went up between 1791 and 1809 in multicoloured stock brick, three storeys over a basement, and the matching northern half never came, so plainer Victorian houses filled the gap around 1840. The southern crescent is Grade II listed. That half-built plan is the short version of the streets behind the DLR station: later Georgian, Regency and Victorian, London stock brick, Portland stone and slate, nearly all inside the West Greenwich Conservation Area.
Kitchens down the stairs and over the shops
Two patterns dominate. The Georgian and early Victorian houses on Royal Hill and around the Circus often put the kitchen at basement or lower-ground level, down a narrow flight, with a freestanding cooker or a range squeezed against a chimney breast. Above the shops on Nelson Road and around Turnpin Lane the flats are small, and conservation rules make a new external flue a difficult ask, so the hood usually recirculates and the grease has nowhere to go. A hob cleaned alongside the oven is £23–28 and tends to be worth it in those kitchens.
Zone G does not take Sunday off
Greenwich town centre is CPZ G, controlled Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday from 9am to 6pm, which is unusual: the Sunday window is the longest of the week. A tradesperson permit runs £31.10 a week. None of it changes your price. The van parks legally within a short walk, the racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in the heated tank inside it, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products.

Not indoors. The caustic soak stays in the tank in the van, which is the whole reason for carrying one, and everything used inside the kitchen is non-caustic and leaves no smell behind.
Can you get to a basement kitchen?
Usually without trouble. The parts that travel are racks and shelves rather than equipment, so a tight Georgian stair is a nuisance rather than a problem.
What about a range in an old chimney recess?
A 90cm range is £114 whether it stands in a recess or an island, and it wants about two hours.
