On 3 September 1916 a German airship caught fire over Cuffley and came down in a field behind the Plough Inn, the first one destroyed on British soil. William Leefe Robinson had taken his aircraft to 11,500 feet, come in from underneath, closed to something like 500 feet and put his third and last drum of incendiary and explosive rounds into a single spot on the hull until it went up. The Victoria Cross followed two days later, thought to be the fastest on record, and he collected it at Windsor Castle on 9 September. It is still the only VC awarded for action in Britain. The memorial to him stands on East Ridgeway.
It was not a Zeppelin
The airship was SL11, a wooden-framed Schutte-Lanz built for the German army. It was logged as the Zeppelin L 21 at the time and stayed misidentified for years afterwards, which is why the village is still widely said to be the place a Zeppelin came down.
The 1910 station made the village
Cuffley station opened on 4 April 1910 as Cuffley and Goff's Oak, built by the Great Northern Railway on the Hertford Loop between Enfield Chase and Hertford North, and the second half of the name was dropped later. Great Northern still run it, to Moorgate, Finsbury Park and King's Cross. Trains to Broad Street gave way to Northern City Line services into Moorgate in 1976.
