In 1538 Henry VIII pulled down Cuddington's church and village to make room for Nonsuch Palace, and for about 300 years the parish had no church at all. Its old Great Park, named Worcester Park after the 4th Earl of Worcester, its keeper from 1606, was later split into farms.
St Mary's, The Avenue and the 1930s roads
The railway reached Worcester Park in 1859 and put it within half an hour of London. Large villas went up on The Avenue, and their owners wanted a church: St Mary the Virgin opened there in November 1895 and became the parish church the next year. For about 40 years after that the land around it stayed mostly farmland, owned largely by the Stone family. Then, in the 1930s, most of Worcester Park and Stoneleigh was built over, and in 1959 the still-crowded church was given its last two bays.
In Stoneleigh, Epsom and Ewell's 2008 character study files most of the area up to Worcester Park under its 1920s and 1930s estates type: farmland built on before green belt rules, as commuter housing that followed better rail links, with 1950s closes and cul-de-sacs filled in around the edges. One house on Salisbury Road stands out. No. 95, listed Grade II, is a 1937 Modern Movement house in mass reinforced concrete by Connell, Ward and Lucas, drawn as a four-bedroom family home that could be split into two flats as the family shrank.
