From Cubitt's terraces to the St John's Estate
By four agreements made between 1842 and 1853, the Survey of London says, William Cubitt became responsible for the development of much of the district. The land between Manchester Road, East Ferry Road and the backs of Glengall Grove and Strattondale Street was not his, though by the early 1850s it was already known as part of Cubitt Town. The houses of the 1850s and 1860s were typically two or three storeys over a basement, with two rooms to a floor and a wash-house at the back, and cost about £200 each to build. Bombing ended most of that. The Survey counts more than 1,600 houses in Cubitt Town in 1937 and fewer than 700 in 1948, and in Strattondale, Marshfield, Plevna and Castalia Streets everything except the library in Strattondale Street was destroyed.
Poplar Borough Council rebuilt the gap. Its St John's Estate, approved in principle in November 1949, covers 26.8 acres centred on the triangle between East Ferry Road, Manchester Road and Glengall Grove, and Strattondale Street is part of it. The phases went on until 1981: Rugless House (15 flats) and 43 two-storey terraced houses were built between September 1952 and October 1953, five-storey blocks and more terraced houses followed through the 1950s, and Alice Shepherd House, ten storeys and 72 flats, was completed in 1969. John Betjeman called it one of the best new housing estates he had seen since the war.

Parking on the zone D1 streets
Strattondale Street and the streets beside it are in Tower Hamlets parking sub-zone D1, controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm. Bay controls lift on public holidays. The council adds that private land and council estate streets are subject to other restrictions. Tell us whether there is a bay near your block, because the team needs somewhere to park.
