Crossness is a working sewage treatment plant, a Grade I listed Victorian pumping station and a 25.5-hectare nature reserve, and that is close to all of it. There is no housing on it. Satnavs are sent to SE2 9AQ on Bazalgette Way, which was Belvedere Road until it was renamed.
What stands on the site
The pumping station was built between 1859 and 1865 at the eastern end of the Southern Outfall Sewer for the Metropolitan Board of Works, engineered by Sir Joseph Bazalgette with the ornamental ironwork designed by Charles Henry Driver, and its four beam engines, named Victoria, Prince Consort, Albert Edward and Alexandra, are thought to be the largest rotative beam engines left in the world at 52-ton flywheels and 47-ton beams. The Crossness Engines Trust, a charity formed in 1987, had Prince Consort turning again by 2003 and runs it on steaming days. The boiler house now holds a visitor centre and the Ness Cafe. Next door, Thames Water's Crossness works is the company's second largest and treats wastewater for most of south London.
The reserve takes up the rest
Crossness Nature Reserve was set up under a Section 106 planning condition in 1994, is owned and managed by Thames Water, and forms part of Erith Marshes, a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. None of it has a kitchen in it.

Thamesmead was begun in 1967, when the first pile went into the Erith and Belvedere marshland, and the Greater London Council built it out to 1980 using concrete panels cast at its own Industrialised Building Factory in West Thamesmead. That stock is now part-demolished under Peabody's regeneration, so SE2 today runs from original system-built flats to new-build kitchens with an integrated single oven behind a matching door. Do you actually cover Crossness?
Yes, SE2 includes Crossness. There is almost nothing residential on that side, so in practice the bookings are Thamesmead addresses.
My flat is a new-build with the oven built into a tall unit. Is that a problem?
No. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and go to a heated tank in the van, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand in place.
Will there be a smell in a small flat?
It should not. The soaking is outside the building and the indoor work uses non-caustic products.
