The Crook Log pub is an 18th-century coaching inn, once called the Fox and Hounds: painted brick with two canted bays and a weatherboarded outhouse, listed Grade II in 1980.
The Crook Log junction on Watling Street
This stretch of the old London to Dover road, now itself called Crook Log, used to be London Road. On the corner of Dallin Road stood No. 35, a house of about 1840 with a coach house and stable; it was pulled down in the 1980s and replaced by a block of flats. Upton College, a day and boarding school founded in 1910, had moved to No. 62, Leinster House, by 1934, and was bombed out in 1940.
The area round Brampton Road, north of the junction, was built up in the 1930s, most notably by the local builder D. C. Bowyer. The leisure centre on Brampton Road (DA7 4HH) has a 25m pool and a 20m learner pool.
Bigger houses down Danson Road
South of the junction, Danson Road was part of the Danson Estate. The grandest houses there were J. W. Ellingham's, one of them at the Bean Road corner: detached, built of better materials than the neighbourhood average, with a living room, parlour and kitchen downstairs, three bedrooms above and views of the park. No. 71 Danson Road, built in 1934 by the local firm Martin and Company to a design by the Indian architect D. C. Whadwa, is listed Grade II. It was one of eight adjoining Modern Movement houses he designed on the road, the first in that style in the Bexley area, and is much the best survivor: rendered brick, a flat roof, metal Crittall windows and a sun lounge on top. Not every plan got through. In 1923 the council turned down Ellingham's eight houses for Alers Road because they had too few sewage outlets.
Crook Log ward had 5,962 households at the 2021 Census: 55.2% lived in a semi, 16.4% in a terrace, 15.1% in a purpose-built flat and 8.9% in a detached house. Three in four (76.5%) owned their home. A detached house with a long kitchen can take a 90cm range cooker or a built-in double; a flat is more likely to have a built-in single.
Whatever the size, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

On Bexley's list of controlled roads (checked 4 October 2026), the north side of Crook Log, from No. 2 to Whitehaven Court, and part of Brampton Road, from Basilon Road, are in the Bexleyheath Station zone. Danson Road, Alers Road and Iverhurst Close are not listed. The council shows each zone's hours on its entry signs, so check the signs where you live. The team needs somewhere to park near the house.
