The Rivoli Ballroom sits opposite Crofton Park station, and the Victorian terraces that run back from Brockley Road behind it are where most of our SE4 work is. Crofton Park filled in during the 1890s when the railway arrived, so the housing is mainly Victorian and Edwardian, and a good share of it falls inside the Brockley Conservation Area designated in 1974. Those kitchens tend toward freestanding cookers and the occasional 90cm range dropped into a knocked-through galley.
The older the cooker, the more the door glass and fan cover have baked on, and both come clean by hand indoors.
Here is how the clean runs. Racks, shelves, trays and the side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so nothing sharp is left in the kitchen when we go. The door is split where the design allows so the inner pane comes clear. Then the oven is heat-tested and signed off.
Parking on the villa streets is a real part of the day. Much of Crofton Park sits under a Lewisham controlled parking zone, and the terraced roads off Brockley Road are tight, so we sort a bay or permit before the van arrives with the tank.

The larger Victorian houses near the Brockley Jack on Brockley Road often run a 90cm range where the family has stayed put and reworked the kitchen. Will there be a chemical smell after?
No. The caustic soaking is done in the tank in the van. Indoors it is non-caustic products by hand only, so you can use the oven the same evening.
Do you clean conservation-area period ovens the same way?
Yes. The method does not touch the fabric of the house. We only work on the cooker, whatever its age.
How long will a single oven take?
About ninety minutes. A range is longer, nearer two and a half hours once both cavities are done.
