In 1540 Henry VIII granted Crockenhill to Sir Percyval Hart of Lullingstone, and the land stayed with the Lullingstone estate until it was broken up in the 1930s. The parish council's history reads the name, recorded as Crockern-Held in 1388, as the hill where a pottery kiln stands, and Tylers Green Road and Tilecroft recall the tile-making that went with it.
A market-garden village
By the middle of the 19th century strawberries were growing on cleared woodland here, and under the Hart Dyke family's benevolent rent policy the most enterprising smallholders gradually became wealthy farmers. The hamlet grew big enough for a church of its own: All Souls' on Church Road went up in 1851 to Edwin Nash's design, in Kentish ragstone, mainly paid for by local subscription. Market gardening gave work in the village right up to the 1960s, when cheap imports ended it.

Today the village spreads along Cray Road, Tylers Green Road and Stones Cross Road, with Bransell Close and Woodmount among its other streets. Crockenhill and Well Hill ward had 832 households at the 2021 Census: 32.7% in a detached house, 31.4% in a semi, 23.8% in a terrace and 7.3% in a block of flats. Most households (73.1%) owned their home. Social renting was 15.2%, but only 2.2% of households rented from the council; the rest rented from other social landlords such as housing associations.
A mix like that means anything from a built-in single in a terrace to a range cooker in a detached house with a large kitchen. Each is taken apart the same way, after dust sheets go down:

- The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand, and the door is split where its design allows.
More building may be coming. Bellway presented plans for 152 homes on land south of Tylers Green Road in September 2026; press reports of 16 September said no planning application had yet been submitted. On 30 September the parish council reported plans for a second estate on the Middle Farm Nursery site.
