William Crew, a former under-keeper of Enfield Chase, built a house and barn on four acres fenced off the Chase, on the south side of Cattlegate Road opposite where Crews Hill station now stands. He died in 1785 aged 104, by which time the hill already carried his name.
Detached houses on a few Crews Hill roads
The station opened on the Hertford Loop in 1910, and a small estate of 102 houses followed after 1931; the Victoria County History counts it as one of the few places on the old Chase built up in the 1930s. When the green belt was drawn, everything at Crews Hill went inside it except a few residential streets. The houses today are on Cattlegate Road, Ash Ride, Cypress Avenue, Beech Avenue and Golf Ride, with Rosewood Drive and Wroxham Gardens near Theobalds Park Road. The Enfield Dispatch put the population at about 500 in 2021.
At the 2021 Census the output area that takes in Cattlegate Road, Ash Ride, Cypress Avenue, Beech Avenue and Golf Ride had 116 households. 106 of them lived in a detached house, and nine rented privately. The neighbouring output area, which takes in Rosewood Drive, Wroxham Gardens and Strayfield Road, had 115 households, 77 of them in detached houses.

Plans to build on the green belt round Crews Hill
The land around those roads (glasshouses in the 1940s, garden centres and the golf course now) is the subject of a long planning fight. Enfield's draft Local Plan allocates about 5,500 homes at Crews Hill. In March 2026 the government shortlisted Crews Hill and Chase Park, taken together, as one of seven possible new towns of up to 21,000 homes.
After the May 2026 elections the new Conservative-led council wrote to the housing minister on 28 May to withdraw from the new town programme. The planning inspector's letter of 15 June kept the Crews Hill allocation in the Local Plan but said most of Crews Hill Golf Course should stay in the green belt, with Cattlegate Road as one possible boundary (Enfield Dispatch report). In September the minister said a decision on the new town would come before the end of the year. None of it is built, so an oven clean here today means one of the existing houses.

Parking for the van in Crews Hill
No controlled parking zone covers Crews Hill on the copy of Enfield Council's zone map archived in December 2022; zones can change, so check the signs on your road before the day. The team needs somewhere to stand the van for the visit. A drive is ideal if you have one. Dust sheets go down in the kitchen, the racks, trays and side runners are lifted out to be soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand.
