Creekmouth was a village of about fifty small houses in two rows, built in the 1850s by John Bennet Lawes for the workers at his fertiliser factory; the North Sea flood of 1953 flooded the whole village to about three feet, and it was demolished afterwards.
Creekmouth today is mostly industry
The Lawes Chemical Company's works, set up in 1857, made artificial fertiliser and sulphuric acid, and a school opened there in 1901 in association with the company and closed in 1928. Nobody was killed in the flood, and the residents were moved to the Thames View estate, which Barking Council built between 1954 and 1960 on marshland that had been thought unfit for housing, using piles and rafts. River Road and Thames Road are now one of the borough's largest employment areas, the Barking Creek barrier went up in the early 1980s, and a project begun in 2005 turned land beside it into the Creekmouth Open Space.
The old village is gone and the land by the creek is industrial, so the homes this page is really about are to the east.
Marine Drive and the streets towards Barking Riverside
The postcodes this page covers are on Marine Drive, Atlantis Close, Schooner Close and the closes beside them, between the Thames View estate and Barking Riverside station. The postcodes were created in 2001 and 2002; the station opened in July 2022. Five of the six fall in the census area the House of Commons Library names Thames View, which also takes in the 1950s Thames View estate. It had 2,663 households at the 2021 Census: 50.2% lived in purpose-built flats and 28.7% in terraced houses, 48.2% rented from a social landlord and 19.9% privately.
