Creekmouth has almost no houses in it. John Bennett Lawes built a village here around 1850 for the workers at his chemical fertiliser factory, roughly fifty small houses in two rows, with a school, a Mission Hall, a shop and The Crooked Billet pub, which appears in the records as far back as 1719. The North Sea flood of 1953 put three feet of water through the whole of it. Nobody was killed, but the village was pulled down soon afterwards and the residents were rehoused on the Thames View Estate. The village is gone.
What stands there now is a working industrial estate
River Road and Thames Road carry one of Barking and Dagenham's largest employment areas, running from small local manufacturers up to multinationals. The IG11 0 addresses along there are units and yards rather than kitchens. At the Barking Barrier end, disused land became the Creekmouth Open Space in 2005. A DLR station was proposed here and then cancelled in 2008.
