Crayford Town Hall on Crayford Road was built in 1915 as the canteen and mess room of the Vickers armaments works, and it housed Crayford's council from 1929 until 1965.
Flats round the High Street and Waterside
The old canteen is now homes too. Its conversion, finished in summer 2014, put a doctor's surgery on the ground floor and 44 flats above it, and 145 more homes went up beside it with a community hall and a new library. In the census area that takes in Crayford High Street, Waterside, Lakedale Court and Swaislands Drive (Bexley 019G), 61.3% of the 631 households in 2021 lived in a purpose-built block and another 12.0% in a flat within a commercial building. Only 23.5% had a house of any kind.
A modern flat usually has a built-in single under the hob, sometimes with an extractor above it. The racks, shelves and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets.
A town built on the River Cray
Crayford grew where the Cray could be forded, and its free-flowing water drew tanning, linen bleaching and silk printing. Swaislands, a printing firm founded in 1812, ran works here until G.P. & J. Baker closed them in 1961. Vickers arrived in 1897; the Tower Retail Park opened on part of its factory site in 1999, and its clock tower on Crayford Road is on Bexley's local list. Up the hill, St Paulinus church dates from the 12th to the 15th centuries. The town's other landmark, Crayford Stadium on Stadium Way, held its last greyhound meeting on 19 January 2025.
Renting and shared ownership by the town centre
Renting is common in the same census area. In 2021, 32.5% of its households rented privately, against 15.1% across Crayford ward, 29.2% rented from a social landlord and 10.6% were in shared ownership. Only 27.5% owned outright or with a mortgage.

Parking in the Crayford Station zone
Bexley's table of controlled parking roads (checked 4 October 2026) puts Waterside, Swaislands Drive and Lower Station Road in the Crayford Station zone, along with stretches of Crayford High Street, London Road, Crayford Road and Crayford Way. It does not list the hours; the council says they are shown on the zone's entry signs. Give us the street and the block name when you book, and say if there is a visitor bay or a residents' car park, so we can plan where the van goes.
Crayford oven cleaning questions
My flat is on the third floor by Waterside. Is that a problem?
No. Mention the floor when you call, and whether there is a lift, which saves a little time.
My oven has a pyrolytic setting. Do I still need it cleaned?
The programme only deals with the inside of the cavity. The racks and runners still need cleaning on their own, so they come out and are soaked and cleaned separately.
Can you clean the extractor above the hob?
Yes. An extractor hood is £28, and a single oven, hob and extractor done together is £117.
Said after the sign-off
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
