Cranham Park, a scheme of the early 1900s on the land between Front Lane and Moor Lane, was presented to the public as an extension of Upminster and failed, chiefly because of the water supply.
Front Lane, Moor Lane and the 1937 estate sale
The Victoria County History of Essex (1978) sets out what followed. Houses of the 1920s and 1930s fronted mainly on the two lanes, and in 1931 twelve council houses called Oglethorpe Cottages opened in Moor Lane. The Benyon estate was sold in 1937. North of the railway its land became the streets with birds' names; between the railway and St Mary's Lane, 35 acres were laid out with streets named after bishoprics. Plans for more, and for a Cranham station, were stopped by the Green Belt Act of 1938, the war and the 1944 planning act, and the station plot became Judith Anne Court in 1959. After the war central Cranham became a commuter suburb, filling the ground between the Southend arterial road and St Mary's Lane, and by 1971 the parish had 615 council houses.
Havering's 2024 character study describes Cranham as having some linear blocks and a mix of suburban homes, with many bungalows of a uniform, consistent character, on modest plots. Near Front Lane, in the small census area (Havering 018D) that takes in Clyde Crescent, Severn Drive and Kennet Close, 59.7% of the 605 households lived in a terraced house in 2021.
Most households in Cranham ward own their home
At the 2021 Census, 85.1% of the 5,149 households in Cranham ward owned their home, and 47.1% owned it outright with no mortgage, against 34.5% across Havering. Outright owners have often lived in the house for years, and a kitchen redone once or twice could hold anything from a built-in single to a range in an extension. Whatever it is, the racks and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand indoors, over dust sheets.

Parking in Cranham and on The Chase
The council car park on Front Lane charges from 7am to 6pm and is free on Sundays, and Havering's charges list shows no on-street pay bays under Cranham. On the residential roads, check the signs and tell us the street, so the team knows where to park. South of St Mary's Lane is the Cranham Conservation Area, designated in 1968: mostly open fields round All Saints' church and Cranham Hall, reached by The Chase, which the council's appraisal says has no vehicle access beyond the group round the church.

Is Cranham part of Upminster?
Havering's 2024 character study treats Cranham as a sub-neighbourhood of Upminster, and the two share the RM14 postcode. Cranham was a parish of its own until 1934, when it and Upminster both became part of Hornchurch urban district, and it is still a separate ward. Upminster has its own page.
