Cowley had 1,170 residents in 1931. By 1959 the council had provided nearly 1,000 houses there, and much of the land east of the main road and south of Station Road had been built over.
The old High Street, once Cowley Street
Before the estates, the village lay along the road from Uxbridge to West Drayton, mostly north of the Iver Lane turning, and was known as Cowley Street. The Victoria County History found that Old Vine Cottage, the Crown and Maygood's Farm on the High Street all dated from before 1700. They are listed Grade II today, as are Cowley House, The Beeches and Poplar Cottage. St Laurence's church, which existed by the 12th century, stands apart to the east near the River Pinn and is listed Grade II*; the streets round it became the Cowley Church conservation area in 1988.
Council estates east of the High Street
The local council acquired the 21-acre Cowley Hall estate, the old manor-house site, in 1929, and houses went up there and in Station Road and Meadow View before the war. After the war its building at Cowley was concentrated on the Nine Elms and Cowley Manor estates.
The small Census area that takes in the High Street, Bryden Cottages and Shepherds Close shows that mix. In 2021 it had 574 households: 35.9% lived in semis, 24.6% in terraces and 22.8% in purpose-built flats. 45.1% owned their home, 29.0% rented privately and 25.3% were social tenants, most of them renting from the council.

Cowley Lock on the Grand Union
The Grand Junction Canal through Cowley opened about 1800, and packet boats ran between Uxbridge and London for a while in 1801. Cowley Lock became a conservation area in 1975; the toll house, the bridge over the canal on Iver Lane and the Shovel pub beside it are all listed. Parking in Cowley
Hillingdon's March 2026 map of parking management schemes shades most of the streets east of Cowley High Street, up towards Brunel University, and marks Stop & Shop bays on the High Street itself. The council says permit bays usually operate from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and can be used with a resident's permit or a visitor voucher; the signs give the hours on each road. The team needs somewhere to park, and a space near the door is best.
