In Covent Garden the borough line runs along Shelton Street, which is parallel to Long Acre, just north of it. The north side of the street is Camden; Odhams Walk, on the south side, is in Westminster.
Odhams Walk, the GLC estate over the shops
The Greater London Council built Odhams Walk between 1974 and 1981 on the site of the Odhams print works, to a design led by Donald Ball. It has 102 flats on a podium of shops and parking. The lower two storeys are 73 L-shaped patio flats grouped round eight open stairs, and a walkway reached by lift serves the other 29.
The tenants today are mixed. In the Census output area that contains three of the estate's postcodes, 78 of the 133 households rented privately in 2021, 31 rented from the council and only four owned their home outright or with a mortgage. Seven Dials, on the Camden side
Seven Dials keeps the street plan Thomas Neale laid out in the early 1690s, though few of his houses survive; 64 Neal Street (almost certainly 1690s) and 61 Monmouth Street (1699) are two of them. The area became a conservation area in the 1970s and a Housing Action Area in 1977.
Some homes here share a building with a shop. Parking on each side of Shelton Street
North of the line the streets are in Camden's zone CA-C, with single yellow lines controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Camden sells visitor permits to residents for their own guests; a tradesperson's van needs a paid bay or one of the council's trade permits, which are good for resident bays and single yellow lines in the zone where the job is.
South of the line, Westminster states that it does not run an on-street visitor permit scheme. It sends visitors to its pay-to-park bays, or to single yellow lines once controlled hours are over.
