Coulsdon South station opened in 1889 as plain Coulsdon, and from 1896 it was called Cane Hill & Coulsdon, after the asylum on the hill to the west.
Cane Hill, from asylum to housing estate
Cane Hill opened in 1883 on 148 acres taken from Portnalls Farm, with about 1,100 patients and 500 staff. Charles Henry Howell laid it out with wards radiating from the centre. Most of the hospital closed in 1991 and a small secure unit stayed open until February 2008; the buildings were pulled down between March 2008 and the end of 2010, leaving the chapel, the water tower and the administration building. The Census area that takes in the estate (Croydon 043E) also has postcodes that pre-date it, so its figures are not the estate's alone: 992 households were counted in March 2021, before the last homes were finished. 60.6% of them were paying off a mortgage, and 79.4% lived in a detached or semi-detached house.

Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
