Cordwainer is a shoemakers' ward with two working churches
Bow Lane is one of the few City lanes still on its original layout, and it used to be two streets: the southern half was Cordwanerstrete, after the cordwainers who made shoes here and still have a livery company, and the northern half was Hosyerlane. St Mary-le-Bow and St Mary Aldermary both still hold services, unusual for a ward this size. The rest is Pancras Lane, Watling Street, Queen Street and Bow Bells House. There is very little housing.
Pancras Lane runs about 65 metres between Queen Street and Sise Lane and has six properties on it. That is the scale we are dealing with.
The ward is known for its bars, not its kitchens
Cordwainer is distinctive inside the City for the number of licensed premises packed into it, which tells you what the ground floors do all day. Domestic ovens are the exception. We get called to the upper-floor flats above the Bow Lane and Watling Street frontages, and to corporate lets on a fixed changeover date, where the agent wants the oven cleared before the check-out inventory is signed rather than after.
When all three Cordwainer seats came up in 2022, every candidate was returned unopposed. Nobody had to canvass anyone, because there is barely anyone to canvass.

City kitchens run a single integrated oven with a hob straight above it, so a lot of EC4N bookings are the oven at £77 with a hob clean added for £23–28 while we are there.
The tank stays in the van and the caustic stays out of the flat
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in a heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products. The door is split where the design allows. The oven is heat-tested before we leave, and the flat does not smell of chemicals.
Can you park on Bow Lane?
No, it is too narrow for the van and the deliveries have it anyway. We take a City pay-by-phone bay nearby and walk the parts in. Our cost, not yours.
Is there a surcharge for a City of London address?
None. £77 for a single oven, the same figure we quote in Croydon. No call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
Do you work Sundays?
Seven days. Sunday around Watling Street is the easiest day for access. The technicians are insured and DBS-checked, and agents who want that in writing get it.
