The Copse Hill conservation area, designated in November 1990, covers one of the highest parts of Merton, and Merton's character assessment describes most of it as open ground: the Atkinson Morley hospital grounds, school playing fields and allotments on the south side of the road.
Thurstan Road's 1870s cottages
The houses are mostly on the north side. Thurstan Road was built in the early 1870s by James Mayhew for Sir Henry Peek, MP for Mid-Surrey and son of the founder of the Peek Frean biscuit firm, and named after Edward Thurstan Holland, first honorary secretary of the Wimbledon Cottage Hospital that stood at the end of the road. Merton's 2002 design guide calls them fine terraces of similar Victorian houses, and notes that front gardens on the north side of Copse Hill are mostly too small to park a car in.
Cottages of that age usually have a narrow kitchen at the back, and the oven is often a built-in single under the worktop or a compact freestanding cooker. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets.
From hospital grounds to Wimbledon Hill Park
In 1863 St George's Hospital bought 28 of the 40 acres south of Copse Hill with money left by Atkinson Morley, who had studied medicine before making his fortune in hotels. The convalescent home opened on 14 July 1869, turned to brain surgery during the Second World War and closed in 2003. Berkeley Homes bought the site in 2010 and built Wimbledon Hill Park around the locally listed 1869 building. Part of the grounds, 5.79 hectares, was leased to Merton Council and opened as Morley Park on 4 May 2019.
The census area that includes Wimbledon Hill Park is mostly detached and semi-detached houses. At the 2021 Census, 47.8% of its 550 households lived in a detached house and 28.4% in a semi, with 19.5% in a purpose-built flat. Of 551 households in the tenure count, 77.9% owned their home.

Parking on Copse Hill: zones VSW1, VSW2 and RPW
Copse Hill itself is split between three zones on Merton's April 2026 road list. Thurstan Road, Rokeby Place and Grange Park Place are in VSW2, controlled Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 6.30pm. Cottenham Drive is in VSW1, which runs only from 11am to 3pm on weekdays, as does RPW at the Raynes Park end, according to Merton's Wimbledon Village zones page. The roads inside Wimbledon Hill Park, such as Chambers Park Hill, are not on the council's list. Tell us the road when you book so the van can stop close to the door.

The homes around Wimbledon Hill Park are in Merton's Village ward with SW20 postcodes, and Raynes Park station is about a kilometre to the south-east.
Can you clean an AGA in one of the larger houses?
Yes. A two-oven AGA is £143 and takes about half a day; switch it off the night before so it has cooled by the time we arrive.
I have a flat in the old hospital building. What do you need from me?
A working socket, the oven cool when we arrive, and the floor number and access details when you call.
Can you come at the weekend?
Yes. We work seven days a week, and Saturdays and Sundays cost the same as weekdays.
