Lloyd Park was once parkland of the Coombe estate. Frank Lloyd, the newspaper proprietor who lived at Coombe House from 1892 until his death in 1927, planned to give some of his land to Croydon for playing fields, and his daughter, Mrs J. R. Garwood, made the gift in his memory.
The old Coombe estate on Coombe Road
Coombe is old. It is first recorded in 1221, when the land belonged to Richard of Coombe, and in the 17th century the estate was owned by Matthew and Daniel Harvey, brothers of William Harvey, who described the circulation of the blood. The present Coombe House on Coombe Road was built after 1761 on the site of an older house; it has since been a convalescent home, a school and a care home, renamed Geoffrey Harris House in 1988. When Tramlink's New Addington branch was dug through Lloyd Park in 1997, archaeologists found Roman ditches and a cremation burial.
The census area that takes in part of Coombe Road with Castlemaine Avenue, Blossom Close, Campden Road and Croham Road (Croydon 029A) is mostly detached houses. The 2021 Census counted 661 households: 55.8% in a detached house, 21.8% in a purpose-built flat, 18.9% in part of a converted or shared house and not one in a terrace. 74.9% owned their home and 20.9% rented privately.
Doubles, ranges and flats upstairs
A detached family house may have room for a built-in double or a 90cm range; a flat carved out of a big house is more likely to have a single, and sometimes a flight of stairs to the street. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows. Parking on Coombe Road
The western stretch is controlled. On Croydon's map of the South permit zone (dated 2008), Coombe Road is shaded from the South Croydon end as far east as Lloyd Park Avenue and Larcombe Close, which are inside the zone too, along with Coombe Avenue and Rutland Gardens. If your house has a drive the van can use, say so when you book; if not, tell us the road and whether you have a visitor permit, so we know where the van can stop. Further out, Coombe Lane runs on past Coombe Wood towards Heathfield.
