Colyers Lane runs roughly 1,515 metres, and Bexley maintains the whole length of it. The ward that takes its name from the lane is stitched from parts of three separate places: Barnehurst, Erith and Northumberland Heath.
The Vickers estate came first
Housing arrived here in 1916, when the Vickers estate went up around Colyers Lane, Barnehurst Avenue and Northway, and because those houses fell inside Crayford parish rather than Erith the children living in them were at first refused places at Erith schools, an argument that only ended with government intervention. The larger wave followed the 1926 electrification of the Bexleyheath line. J.W. Ellingham built the Barnehurst Estate beside the station, 578 semi-detached houses at £600 each, starting along Barnehurst Road.
Interwar semis, chalets and bungalows
What survives is 1930s stock: semis, chalet-style semis, and bungalows along the Northumberland Heath roads. Kitchens in those are usually the original back room or a rear extension, and the cooker is commonly a freestanding 60cm or a single oven housed under the counter. A flying bomb hit the Hurst Road junction with Colyers Lane on 29 July 1944 and nine houses had to come down afterwards, so that stretch carries later infill. A single oven in a Colyers Lane bungalow is £77.
The tank stays in the van
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in the heated tank at the kerb. Indoors we degrease the cavity, fan cover and door glass by hand with non-caustic products, so nothing smells of chemicals once we have gone. The oven is heat-tested and signed off first.
Parking, permits and the ULEZ
Erith's controlled parking zone, the ER zone, covers part of the town centre on permits Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Bexley has been inside the London-wide ULEZ since 29 August 2023, the council having gone to the High Court to try to stop it. That is our cost, not yours. Do you need my sink or my tap?
No. Tank and water are both in the van. In a bungalow kitchen off Colyers Lane there is rarely room for two people and a washing-up bowl.
Can you clean an old freestanding cooker?
Yes. Shelves and trays go in the tank; the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand.
Does this pass an end-of-tenancy inspection?
Yes. The door glass is split where the design allows, which is the part the inventory clerk actually looks at.
How long will it take?
About 90 minutes for a single, two hours for a double.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
