The Vickers estate off Colyers Lane
The University of Greenwich's Ideal Homes project keeps the sales leaflet from 1927, when Vickers, still the freeholder, put this estate and its sister estate at Crayford up for sale. A resident who grew up in Northumberland Way, quoted on that page, recalls that the houses were built in different sizes to match the job (labourer, skilled man or manager), with bigger houses at one end of Northumberland Way, and that the smaller houses in and off Heath Way had baths in the kitchen until grants became available for bathrooms.
A kitchen in a small house of this age may have a freestanding cooker or a built-in single under the worktop, with the hob on top.
