Colney Hatch was first mentioned in 1409, and was a hamlet where Friern Barnet Lane and Colney Hatch Lane meet Friern Barnet Road. In 1795 it was estimated to have only twelve of the parish's 78 houses, mostly belonging to gentlemen.
The asylum that took the hamlet's name
Prince Albert laid the foundation stone of the Middlesex County Pauper Lunatic Asylum in 1849, and the first patients arrived on 17 July 1851. It was then the largest asylum in Europe, with a front almost 1,884 feet long and six miles of corridor. Barnet's local history says the name became London shorthand for anything unusual or irrational, and that the railway station was renamed New Southgate because of it. The hospital, Friern Hospital from 1959, closed in 1993. Comer Homes converted the main buildings into 256 flats, Princess Park Manor, with the last phase finished in 2009; Friern Village Park opened in part of the grounds in 2001.
In the Census small area that takes in the crossroads and part of the old hospital site (Barnet 015D), 41.7% of the 808 households in 2021 lived in a purpose-built block and 12.6% in part of another converted building, a category whose census example is a former school, church or warehouse. Edwardian streets round the crossroads
The houses behind the Orange Tree and many of the shops round the crossroads date from about 1912. E. C. Day laid out the Hollyfield estate on Hillside farm in 1903, with houses planned for St John's and Hollyfield roads and shops for the main-road frontages, most of which were built by 1912. Friern Barnet's council moved into The Priory in 1906, Middlesex opened a library along the road in 1934, and the town hall of 1941 is now flats. The site of Halliwick manor house, on the south-west corner of the junction, was acquired in 1932 by Oldham Estates, who originally planned five new roads, 218 houses and 57 shops.

Down Colney Hatch Lane to N10
The lane was Halliwick Street in 1398 and has been Colney Hatch Lane since 1846. Around 1899 the Albion Estates Company laid out half its Halliwick Manor estate, west of the lane, for 800 houses for sale, while the land on the east side was still farmed in 1902 and built on only in the 1930s. After the war the council was the only large-scale builder, and the Freehold estate was extended westward, as planned in 1949, by Halliwick Road, George Crescent and the west side of the lane itself. The Census area the House of Commons Library calls Colney Hatch (Barnet 022), along this stretch, had 21.2% of households renting from the council or a housing association in 2021. Further south the lane crosses from Barnet into Haringey before it reaches Muswell Hill.
