Colney Hatch Lane is the B550, running from Friern Barnet over the North Circular and up to Muswell Hill. The name is best known for the asylum. The Middlesex County Asylum opened on 17 July 1851, Prince Albert doing the honours, and at its peak it held 2,500 patients behind the longest corridor in Britain, long enough that walking the wards took a visitor more than two hours. It cost £300,000 to build, £240 a bed, the most expensive asylum ever put up.
The hospital is flats now
Renamed Friern Mental Hospital in 1937, then plain Friern Hospital in 1959, it closed in 1993, and Comer Homes took the building and grounds in 1995. The main block is Grade II listed and is now Princess Park Manor, off Royal Drive, standing in 30 acres of private parkland. Conversions of that kind mean a period shell with a modern fit-out, which in practice is an integrated single oven at £77. The oven never moves. Only the racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to the heated tank in the van.
Uphill in N10 the stock changes
Follow the same road up and the housing switches. Muswell Hill is predominantly Edwardian, put up inside a twenty-year window by the builders Edmondson and Collins between 1896 and 1914, and much of it sits inside a conservation area designated on 1 March 1974 that ranks among the largest in London. The detached houses along the Colney Hatch Lane stretch and Alexandra Park Road are the substantial end of it. Do you work in listed buildings?
Yes. Nothing in the method touches the fabric of a building. The oven is degreased where it stands with non-caustic products, and the caustic side of it stays out in the van.
How do Barnet parking rules affect the visit?

Can you clean the hob at the same time?

It is switched on and heat-tested before sign-off, so if something has failed you find out while we are standing there.
