In 1877 an auctioneers' plan marked out house plots on Cavendish, Devonshire, Harewood, Lyveden, Marlborough, Norfolk, Park, Robinson, Rutland and Wilton Roads in Colliers Wood, which was then still a small riverside hamlet.
The 1877 estate and the terraces after it
An economic depression slowed the building, and Merton's character study says the staggered progress left a mix of modest Victorian and Edwardian houses, mostly pebbledash or mock Tudor. By 1914 the area was densely developed, with estates such as Miller Road and Denison Road east of the High Street, and in the 1930s two-storey terraces went up in Valley Gardens, North and South Gardens and Boundary Road. The wood that gave the place its name stood roughly where Warren, Marlborough and Birdhurst Roads are now; it was still on the map in the 1870s and gone by the mid-1890s.
Houses of that kind usually have a kitchen at the back of the ground floor with room for a freestanding cooker, though many have since been refitted with a built-in oven. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Britannia Point and the new flats
The tower beside the tube was built in 1966 as the Lyon Tower and later known as Brown and Root House. After years boarded up, it was reclad in glass and turned into flats, finished by October 2017 as Britannia Point. Merton's Local Plan says that redevelopment started a decade of investment that brought a new public square, a new library and nearly 300 new homes, and the council proposes the car park south of the tower for an indicative 150 to 220 more.

Colliers Wood parking zones, including the weekend one
All ten of the 1877 roads, from Cavendish Road to Wilton Road, are in Merton's zone CW, controlled Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 6.30pm. The zone with weekend hours is CW4, which takes in Christchurch Close and part of Christchurch Road: permit holders only on weekdays from 8.30am to 6.30pm, and also from 11am to 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
