A lighthouse has stood on the point since 1885
Coldharbour Point faces Erith in Bexley across the water, and a ferry ran between the two banks from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. They called it the short ferry, and plaques on both sides now name it the Pilgrim Ferry. What sits on the ground now is industrial rather than residential, which is worth saying plainly before you ring: the lane runs south of the A13 towards junction 31 of the M25, and the Momentum scheme alone was consented by Havering under reference PE/01273/2017 for twelve units and roughly 440,000 square feet. Front doors are thin on the ground. The domestic diary in this postcode sits up the lane in Rainham proper, and those kitchens get the same fixed price list as the rest of Rainham.
The barges in the marsh were sunk deliberately
Half-sunk ferro-cement lighters lie out in the mud off the lane, left from wartime concrete shipbuilding, and in 1953 they were towed to Coldharbour Point and scuttled to hold back flooding. John Kaufman's sculpture The Diver: Regeneration stands in the river nearby, 15 feet of galvanised steel banding fixed 26 feet down into the Thames mud, and every high tide covers it.
