A 1626 deed for a house on the east side of Coldharbour describes it as built on part of the wall commonly called Blackwall, the medieval river embankment that the old road almost certainly began as a path along.
The last fragment of old Blackwall
Tower Hamlets calls Coldharbour the sole remaining fragment of the old hamlet of Blackwall. The West India Docks (opened 1802) and the City Canal (1805) cut through the riverside road, and what was left became a backwater, bypassed before 1817 by what is now Preston's Road. It has been a conservation area since December 1975.
The houses are few and old. Isle House at No. 1 was built in 1825-6 to designs by John Rennie's son, with full-height bow windows for watching the dock entrances. Nelson House at No. 3, put together from two older houses in about 1820, has no known link with Nelson. Nos 5 and 7 are probably the pair a local shipwright, Richard Gibbs, built in 1809, and No. 15, of 1843-4, was the home and workshop of a joiner, mast and block maker. All of these are listed, as are the 1890s river police station, converted to homes in the early 1980s, and the Gun at No. 27, a pub site since the 1710s.
When Nelson House was split into two homes for Port of London Authority police families in 1924-5, a top-floor room became a kitchen. In a house like that the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, after dust sheets go down.

The old houses are a handful. Since 1945 the only new buildings on the street have been private housing, starting with Nos 9-13 in 1971, and the council's conservation area appraisal notes new housing to the west. The census output area round Coldharbour had about 210 households in 2021, so the flats outnumber the houses: 166 lived in purpose-built flats and 42 in houses; 103 rented privately, 54 from a social landlord and 51 owned.
