Until the early 20th century Cockfosters was a scattering of farms along Chalk Lane; its main farmstead, West Farm, is first recorded in 1572.
From Chalk Lane farms to the end of the line
Robert Bevan of Trent Park bought West Farm in 1824, paid for Christ Church in 1839 and built Cockfosters Cottages for his estate workers. In 1911 the place was still called a charming little village. That changed in 1933, when the Piccadilly line arrived at Charles Holden's long, low station of brick and concrete, now listed Grade II, and a shopping parade went up near it. The cottages, Chalk Lane and the park have been a conservation area since 1973, with the cottages added in 1990 and Chalk Lane in 1993.
Cockfosters ward, which also takes in Hadley Wood, has more detached houses than any other ward in Enfield: 26.1% of its 4,023 households at the 2021 Census. Another 35.2% lived in a purpose-built block of flats; 65.8% owned their home and 11.8% rented from the council or a housing association. Trent Park, from campus to homes
The Sassoons bought Trent Park in 1908. In the Second World War the house held captured German officers, whose conversations were secretly recorded. Middlesex County Council took it on in 1947 for teacher training; it became Middlesex Polytechnic in 1974 and the university left in 2012. Berkeley Homes bought the site in 2015 and has built hundreds of homes on the old campus, including seven in the 18th-century stable block, while the ground-floor state rooms and basement of the house opened as a museum on 21 July 2026. The station car park scheme
On 3 February 2022 Enfield's planning committee approved 351 homes in four blocks of up to 14 storeys on the two station car parks, by Connected Living London (TfL and Grainger), on the chair's casting vote after more than 2,800 written objections. The Transport Secretary blocked the land sale in March 2022; the government consented in 2024, announced on 3 September, with 47 public parking spaces to stay and building expected "in the coming years". On the council's zone map as archived in December 2022 the station and Cockfosters Road had no controlled parking zone, but commuters use the car park, so the signs on your road are worth a look. The team needs somewhere to park.
